Enjoy traditional Chinese opera in city
The city of Shanghai witnessed booming development of theater industry in the 20th century when a cluster of theaters and traditional Chinese opera troupes settled in the city. Although traditional operas are no longer a la mode, there are still some old theaters in Huangpu district where you can enjoy the glamor of the traditional Chinese culture in case you are tired of pop music.
Tianchan Yifu Theater
The theater heater has the longest history and the largest scale of any Chinese opera theater in Shanghai. It was once known as Tian Chan Theater. Since its establishment in 1925, it has featured Peking Opera performances and has been favored by many famous Chinese opera artists. Earlier on, it became the 'Largest Theater in the Far East'.
In 1994, the theater reopened to the public after renovation. Now it offers nearly 1,000 seats on two floors. The Peking Opera is still its trump card. Other traditional Chinese opera performances are also available.
