Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume
The Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume (SMTC), formerly known as the Donghua University Museum of Textile, is located inside Donghua University’s Yan’an Road Campus. Officially opened in January 2009, it is a Shanghai Science Tour Demonstration Site, Shanghai Model Site for Science and Technology, National Model Site for Science and Technology, and a Shanghai Experiencing Chinese Culture Site for International Students.
Spread over 3,000 square meters, the museum is divided into four exhibition halls, including a Science Education Exhibition Hall and three other halls displaying clothing from ancient times, the modern period and minority groups. Situated on the first floor, the Science Education Exhibition Hall features textiles and costumes by illustrating the costume industrial chain and special procedures with the help of advanced technology. The second-floor exhibition hall depicts ancient apparel ranging from the pre-Qin period to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The Modern Exhibition Hall and the Minorities Exhibition Hall are located on the third floor. The Modern Exhibition Hall showcases apparel and photos from the late Qing Dynasty to the Minguo period. The Minorities Exhibition, with real apparel and unique multimedia, demonstrates the magnificent costumes and sophisticated weaving techniques of China’s ethnic minorities.
Centering on Chinese textile history and its importance, the SMTC also contributes to academic communication, scientific research and social services. It is a good platform to promote scientific literacy, humanism and fashion awareness among the general public.
