The Shanghai Japanese School's predecessor ‘The Japanese Government General Consulate of Shanghai, Shanghai Japanese School’ was founded in April, 1987. The objective of the Shanghai Japanese School is to provide a 12-year education system based on Japanese fundamental law and educational methods to the children of Japanese nationals living in the People's Republic of China, Shanghai and its suburbs using Japanese Domestic textbooks and scientific methods. The Shanghai Japanese School is located in the Hongqiao school district (a floor space of 8,727 square meters) and the Pudong school district (a floor space of 4,643m).
The Hongqiao school district facility employs 66 Japanese-citizen educators to provide education to 1,457 students from Elementary School Grade 1 through Elementary School Grade 6. The Pudong school district facility employs 74 Japanese – citizen educators to provide education to 1,351 students from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
The Shanghai Japanese School takes the issue of raising student's international understanding seriously and therefore provides weekly Chinese and English conversation classes starting from Elementary school Grade 1.
Each grade's students at the Shanghai Japanese School have the opportunity to visit with Shanghai's local Elementary and Middle Schools in order to carry out friendly exchanges.
