The School of International Education of Shanghai University held an online Dean Reception on Feb 11 to help international students with their study and living needs.
The dean of the school, Yao Ximing, was invited to talk with international students in an online group chat due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Yao educated them about the novel coronavirus and described the measures taken to contain the epidemic via graphs and videos.
He said that the daily lives of people in China, including international students, have been severely affected and asked for their understanding.
Bahrain University, a partner of Shanghai University, has donated 10,000 masks, and international students will be given priority to receive one.
Yao urged them to stay in their rooms and wear a mask if they must go out.
During the Q&A section, students expressed anxiety about the delay of the school term.
Yao said that the delay is for the safety of the students. He added that nobody should return to school before receiving a notice, and the school will keep students up to date on the start of the semester.
The university has been preparing online courses and students are encouraged to make use of online resources in order to study throughout the extended winter holiday.
Official statistics have shown that the number of infected patients is decreasing and teachers will keep students updated, Yao said.
Yao reminded the students not to listen to rumors and closely follow the university’s website and public WeChat account for more information.
