Shanghai University's subjects rise in global rankings

Shanghai University (SHU)'s 19 subjects ranked among the top 500 in the latest Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) released on June 29.
Compared with last year, SHU had two additional subjects (transportation engineering and business administration) on the top 500 list, putting the university at 34th among 253 universities in the Chinese mainland based on the total number of subjects to make the list.
For the first time, SHU had a subject rank in the top 30, with its metallurgical engineering program rising from 40th last year to 26th this year.
In addition, its instrument science, chemical engineering and electronic power engineering programs ranked higher than last year.
The 2020 GRAS looked at 54 academic subjects in five major fields, including science, engineering, life sciences, medicine and social sciences, taught around the world and named the top 500 universities in each of those subjects.
It used a series of objective academic indicators to measure the performance of global universities in the subjects, including the scale and quality of scientific research, international cooperation, research achievements, international awards, etc.
It is targeted at universities which have published a certain amount of papers from 2014 to 2018, and the data for ranking are from the Web of Science and InCites databases.
