Donghua University (DHU), a national key university included in "Project 211" and "Double-First Class" universities, is a multi-disciplinary university known for its programs in fashion design, textile engineering, international trade, material science, and information technology, all of which enjoy strong reputations both domestically and abroad.
It was built in 1951 under the name East China Textile Institute of Technology and was renamed Donghua University in 1999. Located in downtown Shanghai and adjacent to Hongqiao Economic Development Zone, DHU is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China.
The university covers an area of 133 hectares and consists of three campuses - Songjiang campus, Yan'an Road campus and Xinhua Road campus. It has also been honored as a "Shanghai Garden Unit" for its pleasant campus environment.
Donghua University has 17 faculties offering 59 undergraduate programs covering nine disciplines, such as engineering and science, as well as postgraduate and doctoral studies.
Over 70 years of exploration and development, the university has developed from a single textile college into a national key university with distinctive features specialized in engineering and coordinated development of several disciplines. There are 55 undergraduate programs covering nine disciplines such as engineering and science.
It maintains a national leading position in textile science and engineering, while its seven disciplines of engineering, mathematics, materials science, computer science, environmental science and ecology, biology, as well as biochemistry are among the top 1 percent in the world ESI (Essential Science Indicators) ranking.
The university has 14,244 undergraduate, 7,892 postgraduate, and 1,265 doctoral students, as well as 705 international degree students.
The university has 2,320 faculty members, including 1,416 full-time teachers, more than 900 of which hold senior titles, including full-time academicians and winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The employment rate of the university’s graduates exceeds 96 percent, and their salary is ranked from the 16th to 21st places in China's college graduate salary index, with the number of students who start their own businesses exceeding 420.
The university focuses on cultivating high-quality talent with strong practical skills, an innovative spirit and social responsibility.
Students at Donghua University have earned the school countless honors in competitions like the International College Students Programming Competition, IF and Red Dot International Design Competition, World Wearable Art Design Competition, Challenge Cup Chinese College Students Business Plan Competition, World University Games and other major competitions at home and abroad, demonstrating the outstanding teaching achievements and competitiveness of students in athletics, innovation, etc.
The university actively promotes cooperation with international institutions and has established relations with more than 100 renowned universities, research institutes and enterprises around the world, especially in the field of textile science and technology, which is the focus of the university. To date, DHU has educated a large number of international students from over 130 countries.
In 2018, DHU successfully held the World Textile and Garment Education Conference and established the "Belt and Road" World Textile University Union, which includes 33 textile universities from 18 countries. The union has more participating Chinese universities and Belt and Road countries than any other textile association in the world.
It has established the world's first Confucius Institute with textile and apparel characteristics at Moi University in Kenya, as well as co-founded the Shanghai International School of Fashion and Creativity with the University of Edinburgh.
