Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multidisciplinary university with a focus on shipping, logistics, and the ocean. It offers courses in engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts, and science.
SMU has been regarded as a "cradle of international shipping specialists" since its founding in 1909. Over 180,000 of its graduates have worked in port and shipping-related businesses and government agencies. SMU celebrated its 110th anniversary on October 20, 2019.
The university was jointly built by the Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. In 2008, the main body of SMU was moved to the Lin-gang Special Area.
There are about 27,800 students studying at the university in total, including more than 16,000 undergrads, nearly 8,000 graduate students, and nearly 900 international students. SMU has about 1,200 full-time teachers, including more than 190 professors.
SMU has 52 undergraduate programs. Its three disciplines of engineering, computer science and social science are listed in the top 1 percent on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) list.
Since 2010, SMU has had an international class that offers marine technology and shipping management programs to students from other maritime universities throughout the world. The Ministry of Education approved SMU to accept Chinese Government Scholarship students in 2012.
SMU has established close ties with more than 100 international institutions in areas such as teacher communication, joint school operations, scientific research collaboration, and student exchanges, as well as close ties with internationally recognized shipping organizations and institutions such as the International Maritime Organization, Baltic and International Maritime Council, and Norwegian Classification Society.
