Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) is a multi-disciplinary applied research-oriented institution of higher education with a focus on aquaculture and fisheries.
SHOU was jointly built by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The university was included in the "Double World-Class Project" national education program for building universities with world-class disciplines in 2017 for its first-class fishery programs.
SHOU has two campuses located in the Lin-gang Special Area and Huangpu district. It has major research centers like the China Ocean Fishery Data Center and Marine Science Supercomputing Center.
The university has 14 colleges and offers 44 undergraduate programs. It has achieved many significant research results in the fields of aquaculture, marine fisheries, marine resources, aquatic products processing, food safety, low-temperature logistics of agricultural products and fishery economic management.
There are nearly 12,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,600 postgraduates studying at the university. In 2019, the number of international students amounted to 802 and they are from 83 countries and regions. SHOU has around 1,500 faculty members including about 900 teachers and researchers.
SHOU has close relations with universities and international organizations around the world, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), and has conducted a number of academic visits and exchange programs for students. It has signed cooperation agreements with 139 universities and research institutes in 35 countries and regions.
