The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) is a municipal multidisciplinary key applied research-oriented university with engineering as its core.
There are 17 schools, colleges and departments with more than 27,000 full-time students, including more than 16,000 undergraduate students and more than 10,000 graduate students at USST. Of its 2,600 faculty and staff members, there are 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (adjunct academicians included), 66 national-level talents, 237 provincial or ministerial-level talents, 952 teachers with senior titles, and 375 doctoral supervisors.
USST currently has 64 undergraduate programs, eight first-class discipline doctoral programs, 29 first-class master's degree programs, and 19 professional master's degree programs and six centers for post-doctoral studies.
USST has 19 national and 52 provincial or ministerial-level teaching platforms, seven national and 44 provincial or ministerial-level scientific research platforms. Its five disciplines, namely Engineering, Materials Science, and Chemistry, Computer Science and Environmental/Biological Science, are ranked among the top 1 percent of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in the world.
One of the earliest institutions of higher education in Chinese mainland to set up international cooperative programs in school-running, USST, which currently has nearly 1,000 international students, has established cooperative relations with more than 190 institutions of higher education in 37 countries and regions. It has so far established two Sino-foreign joint educational institutions: the Sino-British College and Sino-German College. USST has been one of the vice director-general units of the Shanghai - Hong Kong Universities Alliance.
The university was one of China's first universities to receive approval from the Minister of Education to enroll international students, to whom it offers bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs, exchange and advanced study programs as well as Chinese language programs.
International students can apply for a Chinese Government or Shanghai Municipal Scholarship, and there are many special international education services, such as courses in Chinese, English, Chinese-English, and Chinese-German. The university also offers courses in preparatory Chinese, Business Chinese, Basic Chinese, and HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) training.
International students can also make use of the gymnasium, the athletic field, basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools, badminton courts, and ping pong courts, and can participate in a variety of social clubs.
